OVERVIEW:

A switch and a router are both devices that allow computers to communicate with each other on a network. A switch is typically used to connect devices within a small area, like a home or office, while a router is used to connect devices over a larger area, like the internet. Routers are also able to filter traffic and direct it to the correct destination.

A network switch is a device that forwards and filters data packets between computer networks. A switch is distinct from a hub, which simply rebroadcasts all received packets out all ports except the port on which the packet was received.

Network routers direct traffic between networks and manage communication between devices on a network. Routers use a variety of protocols to communicate with other devices, including the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

NETWORK SWITCHES

A switch is a computer networking device that links network segments and or devices such as:

  • computers
  • printers
  • servers

It receives messages from any of its linked devices and transmits them on to the device it was meant for so that networked devices can communicate effectively.

An unmanaged switch needs no configuration and is suitable for domestic networking.

A managed switch can be configured, managed and monitored. It provides greater control over how data travels over the network and who has access to it.

ROUTERS

  • Network routers allow data packets to traverse across different networks. A router must be connected to at least two networks.
  • These networks are commonly referred to as LAN’S and WAN’s
  • A LAN is a local area network, whilst a WAN is a wide area network.
  • To determine what type of router is best for your application we need to establish the best path for the data to transverse.
